Windows 10 End of Support
Windows 10 Support Ends 14 October 2025 - What’s Your Plan?
After nearly a decade in use, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 in October 2025. If your organisation is still running Windows 10, now is the time to plan your upgrade path. Continuing with unsupported systems could expose you to increased cyber risks, higher operating costs, compliance issues and service disruptions.
What are the risks of doing nothing?
Once support ends, Microsoft will no longer release security patches or updates for Windows 10. Here’s what that means in practical terms:
Cyber risks: Without ongoing security updates, systems become vulnerable to cyber attacks.
Operational disruption: Critical apps or systems may no longer function properly on outdated operating systems.
Escalating costs: Maintaining old devices becomes more expensive and less reliable over time.
Compliance issues: Running unsupported software could impact your cyber insurance or lead to non-compliance with IT policies.
What are your upgrade options?
Delaying may leave your team stuck with limited stock and increased costs. As of late 2024, Windows 10 was still in use by over 60 percent of users globally. In markets like Australia, that could mean hardware shortages by mid-2025 if demand spikes.
There are a few pathways forward. The right one depends on your organisation’s size, device age and performance needs.
Upgrade to Windows 11
If your existing devices meet the hardware requirements, this is the simplest option. You’ll benefit from improved security, better compatibility with new apps, and productivity features like Snap Layouts and AI integration through Windows Copilot.
Replace outdated hardware
For older devices, upgrading may not be viable. Replacing machines with Windows 11-ready hardware ensures long-term reliability and access to modern tools. It’s also an opportunity to standardise devices and improve performance across your team.
Extended Security Updates (ESU)
Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates as a temporary measure for organisations needing more time. This adds some protection after October 2025, but comes at a growing cost and offers no compatibility updates. ESUs are a short-term bridge, not a long-term solution.
Steps to take now
Review all devices. Check which machines meet the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11.
Assess age and warranty. Even if a device qualifies, it may not perform well or be worth upgrading.
Map needs to users. Not every staff member needs a high-spec device. Allocate hardware based on usage and roles.
Create a roadmap. Plan how and when to upgrade or replace devices. Factor in budget, procurement, and training.
Engage your IT partner. A trusted partner like ParagonIT can help with compatibility checks, rollout planning and procurement.
Why move to Windows 11?
Moving to Windows 11 ensures your devices are protected, supported and ready for what’s next. Key benefits include:
Better security: Windows 11 builds on existing defences with stronger protection built in from the ground up.
AI-powered tools: Integrates Windows Copilot and automation features to streamline workflows and surface real-time insights.
Improved user experience: Built-in Microsoft Teams, Task View and multitasking tools make daily work faster and more intuitive.
